SCM Modern Language Course Information
From September 2009 courses in Chinese, Japanese and Asian languages will also be available.
SCM offers 3 types of courses.
GENERAL LANGUAGE COURSES
1- year courses for personal interest, academic or professional development, teaching all four language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing.General courses are taught in the evenings from 7-8.30 pm.
There are 3 termly modules, each of 10 weeks duration.
Each module can be taken separately and independently to receive a certificate towards the SCM Diploma in Modern Languages.
CONVERSATION CLASSES In French, German, Italian, Russian & Spanish.
Many learners want to learn to speak and understand a foreign language for personal, tourist or professional reasons.
For learners aiming at achieving real fluency in the spoken language, we offer
1-year conversation classes focusing mainly on listening and speaking skills,
Conversation courses are taught in the evenings from 7-8.30 pm.

We also provide short, intensive 1-term
6-week or 10-week holiday/business conversation classes
in the Summer Term for tourists/ business specialists wanting to get the most from holiday/business trips abroad.
BUSINESS LANGUAGE COURSES
Designer courses for business people travelling abroad on professional delegations, trade visits or sales meetings.
Individual courses are designed to meet the specific needs of individual professional business people, focusing on their specialist interests.
Courses can be arranged at any time to suit individuals and can be of any length.
These courses are usually taught in very small groups of no more than 3 or 4 specialists or on a private 1:1 basis.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT SCM MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES COURSES
All courses are taught by qualified, experienced teachers
- All courses are tailored to students' personal needs
- We teach in a supportive, enjoyable learning environment
- Attendance/achievement certificates at the end of each 10-week module
- There are no compulsory examinations
- SCM students can accumulate 6 end-of-term module certificates at any time over a 3-year period in up to 3 foreign languages to achieve the SCM Language Learning Diploma profiling their language skills in all 3 languages
- Nationally recognised exams (OCN/Institute of Linguists, EDEXCELL) can be arranged if required
- College is situated in city centre and is easily accessed
- There is free on-street parking after 6.30 pm outside the College
- There is an NCP pay car park opposite the College
- Free taster classes can be arranged on Registration evenings if requested
- Beginners classes are intended for absolute beginners or near-beginners wishing to start afresh
- At SCM we teach learners how to study a language.
- Once you have completed a language course at SCM you will have the personal confidence and know-how to teach yourself other languages
- SCM study groups are small - usually no more than 8 learners in a class at beginners level

COURSE FEES
The full termly course fees for each 10 -week beginners module is £250.
The full termly course fees for Intermediate modules is £300.
Concessionary fees for full-time students in Secondary, Further and Higher Education, the unwaged and retired 65+ categories are available with a 20% discount on all courses.
Course fees for private 1:1 tuition and bespoke professional development and business courses are by private arrangement.
